CAMP ROAD, PARABURDOO — CATTLE GRID
I refer to the actions of Main Roads Western Australia some four months ago in removing a damaged cattle grid from the Camp Road approach to the township of Paraburdoo. (1) Will the minister ensure that sufficient funds are allocated to enable the replacement or repair of the cattle grid to prevent dangerous interaction with wild cattle roaming the streets in search of grass on the town’s lawns? (2) If no to (1), why not? Hon SIMON O’BRIEN

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. (1) The existing grid was a safety issue for local cyclists. It was no longer able to be maintained and was removed. Main Roads is planning to install a painted grid and make minor improvements to the existing fence at this location. Painted grids will provide a smoother surface for local cyclists. They have been used elsewhere in the state and have proven to be successful in stopping cattle movements. Main Roads also advised the Shire of Ashburton that the existing fence around the town and a grid to the north of Paraburdoo need to be better maintained. (2) If it is proven that the painted grid does not work—because some cows are smarter than others!—then Main Roads will review the painted grid with the option of reinstalling a steel grid.
