PREVENT ALCOHOL
AND RISK-RELATED TRAUMA IN YOUTH PROGRAM — FUNDING
203. Hon AMBER-JADE SANDERSON to the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Health:
I refer to the highly successful Prevent Alcohol and
Risk-related Trauma in Youth—PARTY—program conducted out of
Royal Perth Hospital, which works with school students to impress upon them the
impact of road trauma; the funding for which will expire in June this year.
(1) Why will funding not be renewed?
(2) What other sources of funding are being pursued?
(3) What is the total annual cost to the health system of
road trauma?
(4) What is the average cost to the health system per road
trauma patient?

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the
question.
(1) Royal
Perth Hospital has committed to providing funding for core services for the
Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth program, known as the PARTY
program, to 30 June 2015. Beyond this date, RPH is looking for additional
alternative sources to help support its commitment to the PARTY program.
(2) External sponsorship, such as from the Office of Road
Safety, is being sought.
(3)–(4)
The health system includes services provided by the commonwealth and state
governments and private providers. The Department of Health has data about the
services that public hospitals provide but is unable to access data on
commonwealth and private providers that would be major contributors to meeting
the cost of responding to road trauma. If the question is put on notice, the Department
of Health can seek to extract data on the cost of providing treatment
associated with road trauma in public hospitals. However, it is not clear that
coding systems will allow identification of services provided in response to
road trauma. The WA Department of Health uses national coding systems for
coding care.
