ESPERANCE ANGLICAN COMMUNITY SCHOOL - ESTABLISHMENT
I understand that despite the minister’s initial decision to reject the proposal, there is strong and continuing support for the establishment of the Esperance Anglican community school. (1) Has the review been completed? (2) Will the minister be overturning the original decision to reject the application? (3) Will the minister explain the reasons for the delay in announcing the decision? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) The report of the non-government school registration advisory panel, which I appointed to undertake the review, as required by section 168(3) of the School Education Act 1999, has been forwarded to me. (2) Under section 168(6) of the act, I am now considering the report prior to making a decision about the registration of the proposed school. As part of that consideration, I have requested that the Department for Planning and Infrastructure be asked to examine and comment on the panel’s analysis and interpretation of population projections for the Esperance region. Depending on the outcome of that examination, it may be necessary for the panel to meet again with a DPI demographer. (3) Although no time frame for considering such a report, or for making a subsequent decision, is indicated in the act, I am aware that the Anglican Schools Commission’s preference is to establish a school for opening in 2008 and, accordingly, I will endeavour to have a decision made as soon as practicable.
