CORONAVIRUS — END
POINT
212. Mrs L.M. HARVEY to the Premier:
I
have a supplementary question. Just to be clear; I am trying to understand: is
there any talk with the leaders of the other states and territories and
the Prime Minister about whether there is a six-month strategy, a 12-month
strategy or an 18-month strategy to deal with this economic crisis or are we
still in a reactive phase?

I
talk with the other Premiers, chief ministers and the Prime Minister probably
three times a week through the national cabinet process—sometimes
consecutive days. It has been an excellent process. I congratulate the Prime
Minister for suggesting it; it has worked extremely well and I think he would
say that as well. Indeed, he said that it is the most important meeting he attends during the week. During one meeting,
he said that this is the most important issue any of us will deal with
during our lives, and I think he is right.
The medical advice, and I think the
economic advice, is that we are dealing with a six-month issue at the minimum.
I suspect that the economic consequences of this virus will roll on for many
years, if not decades. I suspect that the repayment of the stimulus or the debt
that has accumulated out of this—certainly at the commonwealth level—will
take decades, and it will be an ongoing process for many, many years to come. I
think people across the community understand that. There are no easy answers to
the problems that confront us at this point. Certainly, although we are putting
time frames on some of the restrictions—some of the orders we are
putting in place around social interaction and the like are monthly—I
expect that many of the health consequences will roll on for at least six
months. If we can lift some restrictions prior to that, that would be a good
outcome.
