Certainly, and I thank the member for her question —
Mr W.J. Johnston interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Cannington, I call you to order for the first time.
Mr
P.T. Miles interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Wanneroo, I call you to order for the first time.
Mr
D.C. NALDER : I thank the member for her question and for her ongoing
support of the initiatives in which the state government is taking part across
Western Australia, particularly in our City of Perth to make it a more liveable
city and to continue it as one of the best cities in the world in which to
live.
The pedestrian bridge is an exciting
new development. It will have a platform nine metres wide. It will span the
Swan River, connecting it with the residents of East Perth, the CBD and through
to the Burswood peninsula. It will be some 560 metres in length. From a
technical point of view, the bridge will be 65 metres at its highest. This will
be the same height as the Windan Bridge, so that it will allow pleasure craft
and everything else to move under it freely. It will stretch 400 metres from
bank to bank with a steel cable stay span of 160 metres at its centre. This
will be an extremely attractive feature that will add to the eastern end of our
city. It will bookend the beautiful Kings Park on the west end and will open up
the beautiful Burswood peninsula with a world-class stadium on the east end. I
think it is a fantastic construction and the people of Perth will be really
pleased with the construction of that project. The contract has been awarded to
York Rizzani de Eccher, and we anticipate the completion of this project by
late 2016.
As I said earlier in answer to a previous question, we
anticipate that up to 14 000 people will cross this bridge to and from events.
We also know that on occasion there may be the need for an emergency vehicle to
use the pedestrian bridge and it will be built such that emergency vehicles can
access it if necessary. All in all, it is a very good project and will be a
great addition to our fantastic City of Perth.
