(1) Will the minister support federal opposition leader Kim Beazley’s call to abandon school zones, thereby allowing parents to send their children to schools that offer educational programs appropriate to the students’ needs? (2) Will the minister consider trialling the abandonment of school zones in rural areas? (3) Does the minister support the introduction of a voucher system that would allow Western Australian parents to choose to send their children to the school that offers the most appropriate educational program for their needs, regardless of whether it is a state, independent or Catholic school? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1)-(2) The School Education Act 1999 provides parents with the opportunity to apply for their child’s enrolment in a school outside their local intake area. Therefore, there are already provisions under the act for that. (3) No, certainly not.
