771. Mr F.M. LOGAN to the
Minister for Transport:
As a supplementary question, why does the minister find it so
difficult to provide guarantees that Western Australian workers and businesses
can benefit from government capital works projects, such as the cars for this
rail link and also the Perth Stadium pedestrian bridge? He is failing to answer
those questions as well.
The
SPEAKER : Minister.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Thank
you! Minister for Health, I call you to order for the first time, and Minister
for Veterans, for the first time. Member for Cockburn, I am vacillating on
whether or not to call you. I will give you a chance.

We have just completed a major construction project called
Gateway WA. It is the largest Main Roads WA project undertaken in Western
Australia. There are 600 small businesses that benefit. There was a major
contract for around $500 million, but it flowed through to those small
businesses. We do look at and consider the business opportunities for Western
Australia—no question. But we need to do our due diligence. We are only
in the space of undertaking a due diligence on future railcars. It would be
wrong for either side of politics to get into this game now and make
commitments when we do not know what is the best solution for Western Australia.
Mr M.P. Murray :
Now we know why the member for Morley went to India!
The SPEAKER :
Member for Collie–Preston, I call you to order for the second time.
Mr D.C. NALDER :
Sorry; I will try not to laugh now. The member for Collie–Preston is
quite humorous.
We are creating jobs for Western Australia. We are very
focused on it. We are very conscious of how things have changed in the
construction industry and we are ensuring that we are making great investments
in infrastructure that will create future jobs for Western Australians.
