QuestionView source ↗
I refer the Premier to his refusal yesterday to inform the House whether any of his staff or members of the Government Media Office have spoken to any police officers regarding the incident in which the member for Innaloo was stopped by up to five police cars for traffic offences last Thursday night. (1) Did any members of the Premier’s staff contact any police officers about the incident? (2) If so, who, and what was the purpose of the discussions? (3) Did any members of the Government Media Office contact any police officers about the incident? (4) If so, who, and what was the purpose of the discussions? Dr G.I. GALLOP
AnswerView source ↗
(1)-(4) The Government Media Office has not made any contact with any police officer about issues raised in connection with the member for Innaloo. I am not aware of any member of my staff who has made any contact with police on this issue. The member is simply barking up the wrong tree. He is basing his political intervention in this Parliament on smear and innuendo. My Government operates properly on these matters. Mr C.J. Barnett: Up to five police vehicles were involved. It is pretty serious. Dr G.I. GALLOP: Is the Leader of the Opposition reflecting upon the Western Australia Police Service? Mr C.J. Barnett: It involved five squad cars. That is not normal. Dr G.I. GALLOP: I have confidence in the way in which our Police Service delivers its functions in this State. I assure the House that no members of my Government attempt to influence the police to do what they should not do in enforcing the laws of this State.
