Support for Children in Women’s Refuges a) Specific funding of $25,000 per annum has been allocated to 18 country women’s refuges, including eleven refuges in the Kimberley and Pilbara areas of the State to provide support and activities for accompanying children eg. child support workers, playgroups, child care. This equates to $275,000 pa for the Kimberley and Pilbara. b) Refuges in the following communities will receive additional funding: Derby Fitzroy Crossing Kununurra Halls Creek Broome Wyndham Port Hedland Karratha Roebourne Newman Onslow c) The management committee of each refuge. d) Funding for the majority of the services commenced from 1 January 2003 following negotiations regarding the necessary amendments to service agreements. Negotiations are ongoing with two services (Roebourne and Kununurra) and funding will commence once these are completed. The Onslow refuge has indicated it wishes to postpone acceptance of the additional funding. Assistance to Young People Leaving State Care a) A new service will receive $380,000 pa to assist young people leaving care to independent living. It will provide services to the metropolitan area and will also assist young people in some country areas of the state including the North West. b) The service will be available to all young people leaving care to independent living throughout the North West. c) The Salvation Army d) 1 April 2003

The $32 million was allocated across a range of Government agencies.
Of this, the Department for Community Development was allocated $10.38 million ($2.9 million per annum on implementation).
