I refer to the recently released Building Condition Assessment Reports, and I ask: (a) is the Salmon Gums Research Station owned by the Department of Education; (b) if no to (a): (i) which agency owns it; and (ii) why has the Department of Education taken responsibility for its maintenance, as evidenced by its appearance in the latest assessment; (c) if yes to (a): (i) when did the Department of Education acquire it and at what cost; and (ii) who currently occupies the facility, do they pay rent and, if so, how much; (d) is the Merredin government office owned by the Department of Education; (e) if no to (d): (i) which agency owns it; and (ii) why has the Department of Education taken responsibility for its maintenance; and (f) if yes to (d): (i) when did the Department of Education acquire it and at what cost; and (ii) who currently occupies the facility, do they pay rent and, if so, how much?

(b)(i)-(ii) Not applicable.
(c)(i) A management order in favour of the Minister for Education was issued in November 2001. The site was transferred from the Department of Agriculture to the Department of Education for nil cost, with the Department of Education assuming all liabilities attached to the former research station.
(c)(ii) The following persons use the facility:
Mr J Saunders - rents a house - $3,900 per annum;
Mr P McMulkin - cropping lease - $12,210 per annum plus GST; and
Mr P Ratcliffe - stock agistment - 25 cents per head per week. Approximately $2,760 per annum plus GST.
(d) Yes.

(f)(ii) Previously the building was rented to the Department of Housing for $18,000 per annum plus GST plus outgoings. At present, the building is vacant while remediation work for the removal of asbestos-containing material is being undertaken.
