The Minister for the Environment; Science has provided the following response: (1) As at 16 September 2005 the Department of Environment (DoE) has advertised 529 clearing applications. In addition to this, a further 56 applications have been received and are in the process of being validated, and 158 applications have either been withdrawn or the applications were declined (usually as a result of insufficient or incorrect information) (2) Of the 529 clearing applications advertised, a total of 30,000ha of native vegetation has been applied to be cleared. (3) A total of 240 clearing applications advertised have been decided on. (4) Of those applications advertised and decided on, approximately 12,000ha of native vegetation has been involved. (5) Approximately 10,050ha of native vegetation have been approved to clear since July 2004. This comprises approximately 8670 ha for mining and exploration purposes, and approximately 750 ha for agricultural, horticultural and forestry purposes, and the balance for other purposes. (6) 38 proposals involved clearing of a vegetation type where the representation was less than 30% of the pre-European extent. (7) Of the 38 decisions, a total of 233 ha has been granted where the ecological community to be cleared had less than 30% of its Pre-European extent. This was primarily for pasture, horticulture, mining and infrastructure purposes with the approvals ranging from 0.02ha up to 32ha in area. Most proposals were less than 10ha in area. (8) Seven proposals were approved in Local Government Areas where remnant vegetation cover is less than 30%. (9) A total of 22.72 ha and 18 trees have been approved in these Local Government Areas.
