LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS — DEMAND
1474. Hon TIM CLIFFORD to the minister representing the Minister for
State Development, Jobs and Trade:
I refer to the WAtoday article
about Climate Analytics' report ''A 1.5C Compatible Carbon
Budget for Western Australia'', specifically comments by Professor Bill Hare
that it is unwise and risky for the state government to rely on liquefied
natural gas demand scenarios promoted by industry.
(1) Has the state
government sought guidance on LNG demand scenarios outside of information
provided by the LNG sector; and, if so, which organisations or individuals have
been consulted?
(2) What guidance
has the minister, or a representative of the minister, sought regarding the likelihood
of a decline in the LNG market, particularly in Asia, as the Paris Agreement is
implemented globally?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member. The following
information has been provided to me by the Minister for State Development, Jobs
and Trade.
(1) LNG demand
scenarios are considered within government to inform analysis and advice on
supply from current LNG projects in Western Australia, the prospects of future
LNG projects in Western Australia and the associated domestic gas supply from
these projects. Such analysis and advice takes into account forecasts of global
LNG demand from a number of different organisations both inside and outside the
LNG sector, in Australia and internationally, many of which are publicly
available.
(2) The LNG
demand forecasts referred to above take into account a range of factors,
including commitments to reduce carbon emissions. The effect of these
commitments on LNG demand will be different for individual countries.
