COMMISSIONER FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE - PREFERRED CANDIDATE 860. Hon BARBARA SCOTT to the Minister for Child Protection: In light of the fact that the government has rejected the preferred candidate recommended by the selection committee for the Commissioner for Children and Young People, will the minister be happy for the children of Western Australia to accept a lower-ranked candidate as the Commissioner for Children and Young People; and, if so, does the minister believe that Western Australian children deserve the very best candidate for children’s commissioner? Hon SUE ELLERY

As I have indicated before, the employment process for the Commissioner for Children and Young People is not one that I play a part in. The children’s commissioner will report to the Attorney General. The appointment process is made by the Premier. Therefore, the first part of the member’s question, which makes certain assumptions about whether candidates have been rejected, I cannot comment on; I am not part of that process. I do not know about that. I think part of the member’s question was whether I think that Western Australian children deserve the very best? Of course I do. However, as to the process and where it is up to, I cannot comment on that. It is not a process that is under my control.
