YANCHEP TRAIN LINE — EXTENSION
585. Mr J.R. QUIGLEY to the Minister for
Transport:
I refer to the cancellation of the
Yanchep train extension for the foreseeable future, even though it was deemed
to be one of the two transformational projects in the government's 2011
public transport master plan.
(1) What has
changed since 2012 when the then Minister for Transport announced that the government
was in heavy planning at the time to push that railway further north to
Yanchep?
(2) When is the
minister going to deliver this promised piece of infrastructure to the people
of the northern suburbs?

(1)–(2) I
had huge pleasure in announcing that the delivery and opening of the Butler
train station would happen next month, which some people opposite seem to
forget. It has been delivered ahead of time and under budget. When asked the
question about Yanchep, I said that we would like to do it, but our priority is
to focus on the east and on the Forrestfield–Airport Link. For the last
two weeks, members opposite have tried to undo what we are doing with the
Forrestfield–Airport Link. We are deliberately moving to the eastern
suburbs as a priority.
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Members, I do not want the wall of noise.
Point of Order
Mr J.R. QUIGLEY : The question
related in no way to the airport extension or the Forrestfield line; it was
about the cancellation of the Yanchep extension. The minister is just
addressing the airport line, which has nothing to do with the question.
The SPEAKER : Minister, you are
leading into that subject. Please get to the answer.
Questions without Notice Resumed
Mr
D.C. NALDER : I would have got there. We have not cancelled it. We have said
that our priority is the Forrestfield–Airport Link. At this point, we
are going to deliver that one on time and on budget. I said that we want to do
the Yanchep line, but our priority is in the eastern suburbs. Our next major
piece of infrastructure will be the Metro Area Express light rail. We want to
do it, but we will be prudent and we will deliver it in the appropriate time.
