Will the Premier provide the House with information on the current strength of the domestic economy? Dr G.I. GALLOP
AnswerView source ↗
The Government is very pleased with the performance of the Western Australian economy. There is no doubt that its performance has turned around since the change of Government. I have lost my notes. Mr R.F. Johnson: You need notes, do you? I thought you knew all this stuff. You cannot even answer a dorothy dixer. Mr C.J. Barnett: The hapless Premier! The SPEAKER: Members! I know it is news to members that one piece of paper has disappeared; however, I ask members to allow the Premier to complete his answer. Dr G.I. GALLOP: The truth is that a comparison of this quarter and the previous quarter shows that the Western Australian domestic economy has grown by 5.5 per cent. When we came to Government, there was negative growth in Western Australia because the then Government of Western Australia had no sense of purpose. The public sector had not been reformed and the native title questions that needed resolution were not being resolved because of the political way those matters were being dealt with. As members know, a decline occurred in exploration investment. More money needed to be directed to the geological survey that the Government has facilitated. The State was crying out for new infrastructure investment. That has all happened. The 5.5 per cent economic growth figure is twice the national average, and this is underpinned by a 16.4 per cent increase in business investment, which is coming into the State to create new jobs and opportunities for all Western Australians. The latest job starter figures confirm the effect of those statistics: the number of full-time jobs increased by 1.2 per cent in January, and unemployment fell to just six per cent. This is good news for the people of Western Australia. I could do what I did in the last question and compare the comments of the Leader of the Opposition with the real figures; I will resist that temptation. However, I think the people of Western Australia know they now have a Government that is prepared to roll up its sleeves and get out there and solve many problems that exist in our community. The racial prejudice that existed under the previous Government in the way it tackled native title has gone. The inability of the previous Government to tackle issues related to infrastructure provision in our State has gone. We now have a Government that represents the future and the public interest, not narrow self-interest. We now have a Government willing to do the work necessary to improve the position of our State. That is where we are at in WA today. The negative, carping Opposition will get nowhere until its members recognise that they need to work with the broader community to bring about further improvements.
