WA TOURISM COMMISSION, CONVENTIONS AND EXHIBITIONS
My question is to the vibrant Minister for Tourism in the great State of Western Australia: I understand that one of the roles of the Western Australian Tourism Commission is to attract conventions and exhibitions to Perth. (1) Has the convention and exhibition section of the tourism industry been affected by severe acute respiratory syndrome and the war in Iraq? (2) What is the outlook for this sector of the industry? Mr C.M. BROWN

(1)-(2) I am very pleased to report that the Western Australian Tourism Commission contracts the Perth Convention Bureau to promote Western Australia to the industry involved in meetings, conventions and exhibitions. The bureau’s role is to attract those events to Western Australia. Convention tourists are high-spending tourists and are often described as super tourists because of the amounts they spend daily. In 2000-01, the total level of convention exhibitions attracted to the State by the Perth Convention Bureau was estimated to be worth $65 million. In 2001-02, that dropped back slightly to $64 million. I am pleased to report that in 2002-03, conventions and exhibitions booked by the bureau will provide an economic impact for the State of more than $71 million. I am also very pleased that the contract the Western Australian Tourism Commission has with the Perth Convention Bureau is continuing to provide significant benefits for the tourism sector in Western Australia. I am particularly pleased that the average level of spending by the tourism convention delegates is increasing. That will increase the economic impact on Western Australia.
