FIXED SPEED CAMERAS
Some notice has been given of the question. I refer to a recent decision of the New South Wales Government to relocate a quarter of its fixed speed cameras to better target improvements in road safety outcomes. (1) Will a similar evaluation of the effectiveness of fixed speed cameras occur in WA? (2) If no to (1), why not? (3) If yes to (1), when will such an evaluation occur and will it be tabled? Hon ROBYN McSWEENEY

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question, and I answer on behalf of the Minister for Energy. (1) Currently in WA there are no fixed speed cameras. However, Western Australia Police are currently finalising the installation of a number of fixed speed/red-light cameras at selected intersections. The placement of these devices is based on expert advice provided by Professor Max Cameron from the Monash University Accident Research Centre, who is recognised internationally in the area of speed-related enforcement. Professor Cameron undertook statistical analysis and modelling to help determine the optimal placement of fixed-site red-light/speed camera technology in Western Australia, taking into account, amongst other things, intersection crashes and fatalities to maximise road safety improvements. (2) Not applicable. (3) Fixed speed/red-light camera technology is in the process of installation. As part of good road safety practice, an evaluation of this and other speed enforcement technology will occur at an appropriate time.
