I have a supplementary question. Can the minister confirm that she has received correspondence from the federal Minister for Transport stating that her plans to abandon stage 8 of the Roe Highway and the Fremantle eastern bypass may put at risk the $76 million in federal funding for construction of stages 6 and 7 of the Roe Highway? Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN

As I said in my response to the initial question, the Government has received correspondence from the federal minister. We have also had a number of very constructive meetings with the federal minister, at which we set out our very creative and imaginative six-point plan. The minister tells us he is particularly interested in the work we are doing to improve the disgraceful performance of moving only three per cent of containers into the port of Fremantle by rail. We are seeking to raise the percentage to 30 per cent. The minister has indicated that he is very interested in that idea and that he is actively considering assisting us with the funding for this option. The Government is prepared to argue its case in the national forums. What the members for Murdoch and Carine and their Liberal mates in the Melville City Council are doing is very destructive for the interests of this State.
