MITCHELL FREEWAY —
WIDENING
180. Mrs
J.M.C. STOJKOVSKI to the Minister for Transport:
I
refer to the McGowan Labor government's commitment to supporting
businesses and jobs through the government's record spending on
roads. Can the minister update the house on the work underway to deliver the
widening of the Mitchell Freeway between Hodges Drive and Hepburn Avenue, and
other key road projects?

I thank the member for Kingsley for
the question. These are difficult times for many people in the state, but as
part of my portfolio, I am very keen to make sure that we continue our record
infrastructure delivery in this state. We know that building roads and rail
lines is a huge job creator. Within the guidelines and rules set by the federal
government, together with the state government, we will continue to deliver
much-needed infrastructure and jobs in our community.
Recently, we called for expressions
of interest to design and construct 8.8 kilometres of additional lane on the
Mitchell Freeway between Hodges Drive and Hepburn Avenue. When the upgrades are
complete, it is anticipated that the southbound capacity of the freeway will
increase by up to 50 per cent, creating shorter journey times for people in the
northern suburbs. As the member knows, we are upgrading the principal shared
path and looking at exactly how much of that project we can complete as part of
the widening project. Together with the other freeway works, we anticipate
significant savings in congestion and travel times for people in the northern
suburbs. In some more recent announcements, another major project has been
mentioned. I know members in the south west will be excited to know that two
consortia have been short-listed to be invited to submit detailed proposals to
design and construct the Bunbury Outer Ring
Road, a massive project. It is a project worth more than $800 million that will provide huge job opportunities for people in the south west and, of
course, will deliver a major project that will help continue to transform the
south west and create many economic opportunities. The two consortia are made
up of the following companies: Forrest Alliance, comprising CPB Contractors,
Carey Mining Company, Densford Civil, GHD and BG&E, and Southwest Connex,
which is a consortium of Acciona, NRW Contracting, MACA Civil, AECOM and
Aurecon. Two very good consortia are now bidding and we hope to award the
contract before the end of the year with construction to commence next year. We
will continue to work with our contractors and our companies to drive jobs and
opportunities.
As I said, I believe it is a time
for some economic good news to keep going and to try to make sure people have
confidence in what we are doing in WA. I believe our infrastructure program is
a key to continuing to drive jobs and economic certainty for Western Australia.
