I refer the Premier to his media statement on Harmony Day last week, in which he said - Our vision is to create an inclusive and harmonious WA, where all Western Australians are . . . supported to reach their full potential with dignity and respect . . . I fully support that statement. (1) Is the Premier aware that the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure in this House last night described a peaceful Western Australian religious community as akin to the terrorist-supporting Taliban? (2) Will the Premier insist that the minister make a full and unreserved apology to this group? Dr GALLOP

(1)-(2) I am unaware of what the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure said. Mr Johnson: You should have been here. Dr GALLOP: I was not here. I am unaware of what she said. An opposition member: It was on the radio this morning. Dr GALLOP: I am unaware of what she said. All groups in our community deserve respect, even though they may have different values and points of view. I expect all members of Parliament, including all ministers in my Government, to respect the differences that exist in our community. Sometimes there are conflicting values and views, and it becomes difficult when those conflicting values and views go to the heart of legislation. The case of the brethren and the industrial relations legislation is not easily remedied, because it involves the right of people to form collectively and organise at the workplace level and the right of people to express their religious views. Those two rights come into conflict. Mr Barnett: What happened to the ministerial standards? Dr GALLOP: I did not hear what the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure said. I will check what she said before I respond to the question.
