BENNETT BROOK DISABILITY
JUSTICE CENTRE — LEAVE OF ABSENCE
773. Hon PETER COLLIER to
the Minister for Disability Services:
Will the minister confirm that on 16
February 2019, a resident of the Bennett Brook Disability Justice Centre
absconded when taken to a metropolitan beach and was missing unsupervised for
more than 30 minutes before being located wandering around a beachside holiday
park in South Coogee?

I thank the Leader of the Opposition
for some notice of the question.
The Department of Communities keeps
my office informed of significant incidents that occur at the Bennett Brook
Disability Justice Centre. I am advised that the disability justice officers
who were supporting the resident on the authorised leave of absence in question
lost line of sight of the resident for half an hour. The resident did not
attempt to flee the area and returned to the vehicle when requested by the
disability justice officers. Any instance in which a resident of the disability
justice centre does not adhere to the conditions of their leave-of-absence
order is considered significant and is reported immediately to the Mentally
Impaired Accused Review Board and to the Mental Health Advocacy Service during
its next visit to the centre, which, in this case, was approximately three days
after the incident.
