I refer to the need to promote international sporting events in Western Australia, particularly women’s sporting events that hold tourism potential. Have any events been planned? Mr BROWN

I thank the member for Wanneroo for her question and the interest she has shown in women’s sporting events in Western Australia, particularly those with tourism potential. I am delighted to inform the House that next November the Women’s World Cup of Hockey will be held in Western Australia. This is a terrific event. It is held every four years and 16 teams from across the world will come to Western Australia. The teams that have qualified to play next year are from Argentina, Australia, China, Korea, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa and Spain. The event will be held over 14 days and as Australia is the defending champion, one can imagine how fierce the competition will be and the high level of interest that will be shown in this event. The Women’ World Cup hockey event is provided with significant support by the State Government through EventsCorp and $450 000 has been set aside to help this international sporting event take place. This will be a terrific event. EventsCorp estimates that it will provide $7 million in direct economic impact for the tourism industry and the event will give great exposure to Western Australia both nationally and internationally. We expect that over 450 participants, 160 members of the international media and many spectators will take part in this terrific event. We are all extremely proud of the Australian women’s hockey team. The Hockeyroos have had significant success over the years. They have been one of the most successful Australian sporting teams on the international stage. I am sure that as a result of their success and the great level of interest now in hockey, particularly women’s hockey, this event will prove very successful for Perth and be a successful tourism and sporting event.
