The 2000-01 'budget was presented on a government finance statistics (GFS) basis as agreed by all Australian governments under the Uniform Presentation Framework for public sector finances. Within this framework, the focus of the 'budget' presentation is the general government sector and this will continue for the next budget. Treasury has recast the financial data for each year from 1993-94 into the current framework and on this basis: (1) The general government surplus (+) or deficit (-) in each year was ($ million) (a) -358.8 (b) 417.3 (c) 301.1 (d) -197.9 (e) -263.5 (f) -136.0 (g) -30.2 (h) 98.0* (2) General government revenue in each year was ($ million) (a) 6,755.6 (b) 7,397.0 (c) 7,930.3 (d) 7,892.1 (e) 8,575.7 (f) 9,012.4 (g) 9,692.8 (h) 10,241.9* (3) General government expenses in each year were ($ million) (a) 7,114.4 (b) 6,979.7 (c) 7,629.2 (d) 8,090.0 (e) 8,839.2 (f) 9,148.4 (g) 9,723.0 (h) 10,143.9* * Forecast from the Pre-election Financial Projections Statement released 15 January 2001.

The meaning of the word 'budget' has changed in recent years. The coverage has been extended and modern accounting principles applied.
The 2000-01 'budget was presented on a government finance statistics (GFS) basis as agreed by all Australian governments under the Uniform Presentation Framework for public sector finances.
Within this framework, the focus of the 'budget' presentation is the general government sector and this will continue for the next budget.
Treasury has recast the financial data for each year from 1993-94 into the current framework and on this basis:
(1) The general government surplus (+) or deficit (-) in each year was ($ million)
(a) -358.8
(b) 417.3
(c) 301.1
(d) -197.9
(e) -263.5
(f) -136.0
(g) -30.2
(h) 98.0*
(2) General government revenue in each year was ($ million)
(a) 6,755.6
(b) 7,397.0
(c) 7,930.3
(d) 7,892.1
(e) 8,575.7
(f) 9,012.4
(g) 9,692.8
(h) 10,241.9*
(3) General government expenses in each year were ($ million)
(a) 7,114.4
(b) 6,979.7
(c) 7,629.2
(d) 8,090.0
(e) 8,839.2
(f) 9,148.4
(g) 9,723.0
(h) 10,143.9*
* Forecast from the
Pre-election Financial Projections Statement
