I refer to a media statement dated 4 May by the Victorian Minister for Tourism that states that the Victorian State Government budget will contain an additional $40.6 million to combat the impact of severe acute respiratory syndrome on tourism. (1) Is the minister aware of this announcement by his Victorian counterpart to inject $40.6 million into Victoria’s tourism budget, including an additional $10 million over four years to fund regional marketing campaigns? (2) Will the Government provide additional funding for regional marketing in the forthcoming budget to capitalise on regional tourism to offset the impact of the SARS crisis in Western Australia? Mr C.M. BROWN

I thank the member for the question. (1) Yes, I am aware of the Victorian minister’s statement. (2) As the member knows, we made particular election commitments to regional tourism. Those election commitments have either been fully implemented or are in the process of being implemented. In addition, we have assisted the tourism industry through difficult times in the past. We are very conscious of the SARS position. This morning I participated in a telephone meeting with the federal Minister for Tourism and all the state tourism ministers. Several members interjected. Mr C.M. BROWN: It is unfortunate that members opposite are not interested in hearing the answer. They keep interjecting and, as always, taking a superior Liberal attitude to everything. The Government is interested in getting on with the job. We have heard all the grandiose statements from those on the other side. When they were in government, they did nothing and achieved nothing, and they are still doing nothing.
