BAIL ACT — AMENDMENTS
165. Ms L. METTAM to the Attorney General:
I have a supplementary question. If
the government can rush through electoral reforms, why cannot these reforms,
which could prevent potentially tragic outcomes, be expedited in the same
manner?

AnswerView source ↗

The electoral reforms were
introduced last year after the winter break, when concentrated drafting effort
was given to them. This particular reform concerning the Bail Act had to go to
all stakeholders, especially the Chief Justice, the Director of Public Prosecutions and others, for feedback. Some of
the comments that came back required further drafting. This will be a law
for the ages. It will affect many child victims. It was very important to have
the court onboard with these changes and to have them properly drafted so that
the proper protection can be given to child victims from their assailants.
