POLICE — CRIME
STATISTICS — NORTHBRIDGE
723. Mr P.A. KATSAMBANIS to the Premier:
I refer to the horrific front page
of today's The West Australian highlighting yet another glassing
attack. Can the Premier confirm that Western Australia Police Force statistics
reveal that the number of dangerous assaults in Northbridge has skyrocketed by
39 per cent in the last 12 months and are now at the highest on record?

Like everyone, I saw the imagery on
the front page of The West Australian today, and, clearly, it is appalling
that someone would do that to another person. Whether it is in Northbridge or
anywhere else in Western Australia, I find it completely and utterly
unacceptable. I urge the person responsible to come forward, and I expect the
full force of the law to be thrown at that person.
These events have been occurring for
decades. The truth is that crime rates overall have gone down since the Liberal
Party was in office. The former government had a flawed policing model in
place, which resulted in a crime wave when the Leader of the Opposition, Liza
Harvey, was Minister for Police. We reversed that flawed policing model, and we have now seen crime rates decline
across Western Australia. Overall crime rates have come down by 6.3 per
cent; assaults, 2.3 per cent; and home burglaries, 19.9 per cent. Across Western
Australia, since Labor has been in office, crime rates have gone down from when
Liberal Party was in office. We reinstated traditional policing, we got
confidence back into the police force, we have the meth border force in place
and we have Commissioner Dawson resolving many issues, so we have found that
the number of a range of crimes has come down. Obviously, incidents like we saw
in Northbridge are completely and utterly unacceptable. I urge the perpetrator,
if he or she has not already done so, to give themselves up.
