The Department of Corrective Services advises:
Responses are based on a distinct count of prisoners. Where a prisoner entered the WA prison system on more than one occasion during the period specified, they have been counted only once.
Responses to questions seeking information on the number of prisoners with a drug related offence are based on the most serious offence of the prisoner.
In the 2014 calendar year 6,613 adult prisoners entered the WA prison system.
