The Western Australian Police Force advised the following:

Notes:
1. Incidents of Family Violence (FVIRs) are included if a family relationship (FR) has been established between the parties involved (see note 5 for FR definition) and the incident was reported to or became known to police during the time period from 01 August 2017 to 31 July 2018.
2. A general incident of Family Violence is considered to be an incident that does not include any valid offences.
3. It is possible that a person could be identified and processed as an offender in the Incident Management System (IMS), without being recorded as a person of interest. In those instances, these offenders won’t be included in figures for answers (2) and (3).
4. Figures in answer (3) exclude persons of interest if the gender is unknown or undetermined.
5. On 1 July 2017, amendments to the Restraining Orders Act 1997 and to the WA Police Force family violence policy and procedures were implemented. In line with the legislation, all references to the term ‘domestic’ have been removed and replaced with the term ‘family’.
6 . A family relationship is defined for the purpose of recording incidents by the WA Police Force as:

An act of family violence is defined, as per section 5A of the Restraining Orders Act 1997 (WA), as one of the following acts that a person commits against another person with whom he or she is in a family relationship – b) any other behaviour by the person that coerces or controls the family member or causes the member to be fearful.
8. a) violence, or a threat of violence, by a person towards a family member of the person; or
b) A child has been defined as a person aged 17 years or under at the time the incident occurred. If an occurred date has not been recorded, the age has been determined based on the date the incident was reported.
9. Figures in answer 4 exclude victims if the age is unknown.
