(a) - (b) Since the Government introduced the
Road Traffic Amendment (Impounding and Confiscation of Vehicles) Act 2004,
in September 2004 there has been 169 vehicles seized and impounded in the Peel District.
WA Police takes a proactive approach to road safety with local Police Traffic areas collecting intelligence and analysing information from the public so as to target areas which experience significant anti-social driver behaviour. Police also undertake appropriate additional action to target specific complaints.
In 2004 the Commissioner of Police established the Traffic Enforcement Group (TEG) (based in Perth) to specifically police traffic laws. The TEG has a no-tolerance approach to those who break traffic laws or drive in a dangerous and anti-social fashion. If required, the TEG will assist police districts by providing additional patrols. TEG also conducts specialised traffic patrols in high visibility vehicles and unmarked patrol vehicles.
Targeting hoon driving is part of daily police operational duties and forms part of the normal police budget. Funding is also sought through the Strategic Targeted Enforcement Program (STEP) which allows this type of behaviour to be targeted during additional patrols that are implemented.
