I refer the minister to the annual grant of $500 000 that the Road Safety Council has given to the Australasian Spinal Research Trust since 1998. The trust develops treatment options to help the 600 people who suffer spinal and brain injuries each year. (1) Does the Government intend to cut the Road Safety Council’s funding to the spinal research centre? (2) If not, why has the Government not made a commitment to the trust to continue the funding? (3) Will the minister guarantee that the funding will be continued and increased to fund this important research organisation? Mrs M.H. ROBERTS

(1)-(3) I thank the member for the question. The Road Safety Council handles issues of funding and it makes recommendations to the minister. At this stage, my understanding is that it has not finalised a proposition. It will look at all funding submissions and then make recommendations on those submissions to the minister. I will wait for the advice of the Road Safety Council on this submission and all other submissions, as is appropriate.
