I refer to the Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services Report No. 110: Report of an Announced Inspection of Casuarina Prison tabled 22 August 2017, and ask: (a) what is the total budget dedicated to the procurement of new inmate reading material in the 2016-2017 financial year; and (b) what is the total budget dedicated to the procurement of new inmate reading material in the 2017-2018 financial year?

The Department of Justice advises:
Please note that the 2017-18 budget was reduced to reflect lower levels of actual expenditure. In 2016-17, $23 500 was spent. A lot of the reading material is procured second hand and purchased at a reduced cost.
Prisoners also have the ability to purchase newspapers and magazines directly. In addition the library receives a large amount of donated reading material.
