(1) Planning consent was sought for the rezoning of a freehold lot on Indian Ocean Drive between Lancelin and Cervantes to allow for a service station, café/restaurant, overnight caravan/camping bays, rest and picnic facilities, exhibition centre and other uses.
(2)(a) An amendment to the Shire of Dandaragan's local planning scheme to rezone the land from 'Rural' to 'Special Use' was advertised in mid-2011.
(b) The proposed amendment was refused by the Minister for Planning in August 2012, and there is no other proposal currently under consideration.
(3)-(4) The proposed amendment that was determined by the Minister in 2012 included a variety of other land uses that had potential to detract from the existing settlements, tourism and other businesses in the towns of Cervantes, Lancelin and Jurien Bay.
(5) The Minister is aware of community concern about the lack of toilet facilities 'on-the-road' particularly between the outskirts of Perth and Jurien Bay.
(6) The provision of facilities is not the responsibility of the Department of Planning.
However, it is understood that to assist travellers in the shorter term, new signage will be erected by Main Roads WA to identify the eight existing toilet facilities located between the Perth Metropolitan Area and Jurien Bay.
The Department of Planning will also continue to facilitate inter-agency discussion on the provision of additional toilet facilities "on the road".
(7) Please refer to 2(b) above.
(8) The Minister is aware that the (then) Department of Environment and Conservation had no objection to the proposed amendment to rezone a site on Indian Ocean Drive to 'Special Use'.
