GOVERNMENT office ACCOMMODATION
How will the Premier explain to pensioners in the hot eastern suburbs that air conditioning is a luxury for them, but that upgraded air conditioning is a necessity for him? Mr C.J. BARNETT

What a silly question. It is a very, very silly question. Mr E.S. Ripper : It’s based on your silly observation in December last year! Mr C.J. BARNETT : Is the Leader of the Opposition suggesting that public servants should not work in air-conditioned offices; is that his position? Several members interjected. Mr C.J. BARNETT : I would expect employees of government to have air conditioning; indeed, although 13 ministers will be based at Dumas House, the other occupants will be public servants, including departments. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Thank you, members! Member for Mandurah, I formally call you for the first time today. I suggest to members on both sides that if they want to hear the Premier’s answer to the question asked by the Leader of the Opposition, they remain silent while that happens. Mr C.J. BARNETT : I conclude with one point: one part of what I announced this morning also related to the “Summer Palace”. If the Leader of the Opposition wants to be a martyr, and if that is what he really wants, he can stay in the “Summer Palace”. If he wants to stay in the “Summer Palace”, and we agree to take out the air conditioning that is there, he can stay there in the “Summer Palace” forever!
