I thank the member for the question. It is a great question and provides us
with the opportunity to think about the issues that are making Western Australia
such a strong economy and such a great state at the moment. It is our work
ethic, our educational resources, our wages and our current unemployment rate
of 3.4 per cent. Economic data released today showed that we have the lowest
unemployment rate of all the states well below the national average of 3.8 per cent.
It is an outstanding outcome. Perhaps our greatest strength in Western Australia is our spirit of innovation and our ability
to dream big—whether it is spray- on skin, the great work that
Canberra is doing, or Fugro's expertise in remote operations. Fugro
recently supported the first moon landing in decades. Our drive to invent and
tackle the world's biggest challenges is broadening our economic
horizons. This spirit of innovation and big thinking underscores my government's
economic diversification mission. We recognise the opportunity, and we are
working on our advantages.
We
are not the only ones that recognise the potential of this state. We recently
welcomed an internationally recognised
venture studio and startup accelerator, Founders Factory, to Perth. Founders
Factory specifically sought out Western Australia as its first location
for its Australian operation because they know of all the states WA offers the
most fertile ground for innovation. Our partnership with Founders Factory will
put Perth alongside startup programs in London, Milan, Berlin and New York.
There will be a $7.2 million investment from my government in the upcoming
budget towards the three-year Perth hub partnership. Founders Factory will
focus on startups that champion nature and WA's unique biodiversity. We
are committed to decarbonising our economy
by 2050 and supporting local startups to harness new technology to
tackle one of our greatest challenges will help us reach this goal. The
partnership with Founders Factory is an Australian first. It decided to come to
WA before any other part of Australia to extend its award-winning program. It is about nurturing innovation, continuing to
provide support for entrepreneurship and taking ideas from idea to
commercialisation. Those great ideas will continue to diversify our economy and continue to ratchet up and gear up our jobs
and opportunities. It does not matter whether it is in the medical and life sciences, biosecurity, our space industry
or our defence industry, we have great strengths right across our economy. By
continuing to support those who are innovating through their great ideas and
their startups, we can continue to ramp up and really supercharge this economy.
