FAMILY AND DOMESTIC
VIOLENCE OFFENDERS — GPS TRACKING
339. Ms L. METTAM to the Minister for Prevention of Family
and Domestic Violence:
I
refer to the minister's comments to Stateline that mandatory
monitoring of family and domestic violence offenders was the priority
legislation for this government, and I quote —
''It'll come in this
year and will build on a strong Cook government reform agenda on legislation
which seeks to protect women and hold perpetrators to account,''
(1) If this is
the government's highest priority, why is there no additional funding
in the budget for its implementation or for additional GPS tracking bracelets?
(2) Why has
legislation still not been introduced to enable this priority reform to protect
women and children?
(3) Is the minister aware that this
commitment was made by her government last year?

I
do not often get the opportunity, but I would very much like to welcome
students from Wanneroo Secondary College to the chamber, my old school.
You are in a great place. Keep learning.
(1)–(3) I
thank the member for the question and for the opportunity to talk about family
and domestic violence and what our government
is doing to prioritise keeping women safe in our community. Since 2017, this government
has been resolute in prioritising keeping women and children safe. Since coming
to government, we have invested some $470 million in this important area. Of
course, we created the first Minister for Prevention of Family and Domestic
Violence, strongly showing our commitment to the place that the prevention of
family and domestic violence needs to have around the cabinet table and the
whole of government.
In terms of our legislative reform
around keeping women safe, our record on a range of reforms and laws is unparalleled
and unmatched. We will continue working on that.
The Leader of the Liberal Party asked
about GPS monitoring. She could direct her question to the Attorney General,
whose portfolio that comes under. I will restate what I have said publicly, what
I have said in this place before, what the Premier has said in this place
before and what the Attorney General has said
in this place before: it is a priority piece of legislation and it will come
into this place as soon as it can.
Ms A. Sanderson interjected.
The SPEAKER : Order, please.
