The Office of Development Approvals Coordination advises:
(a) The approvals required for mining and exploration activity, and their linkages, vary according to the circumstances. The main state departments involved are Industry and Resources, Environment and Conservation, and Indigenous Affairs. Primary approvals relate to obtaining land for the activity and obtaining approval to use the land for the activity.
(b) With respect to grant of an exploration licence or mining lease, the guideline timeframe for the application to be in a state where it could be granted, subject to resolution of Native Title or State land use policy issues, is seven months from application lodgement. The guideline timeframe for approval of mining activity depends upon the significance of the potential environmental and other impacts of the proposal and varies from 3 to 18 months.
Agency statistics provided to the Office of Development Approvals Coordination indicate that better than 3 in 4 processes are completed within the applicable guideline timeframe.
(c) Project proponents are encouraged to initiate necessary local government approvals as early as possible so that these do not impact on overall project timelines.
