We are indeed delving into ancient
history now. It is important that members note that the period of the
investigation —
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members!
Mr R.H. COOK : It is important
for members to note that the period of examination that we are looking into in
relation to this particular piece of corrupt behaviour was during the Liberal Party's
time in government. As I said yesterday, I am seeking information from the
Department of Health to make sure that we have the processes, responses and
everything in place to ensure that it does not happen again. As the Corruption
and Crime Commission observed, there is no suggestion that the policies and
procedures of the department in its modern configuration are not appropriate.
It pointed to the fact that particularly during the period prior to the boards
coming into play, there was not the oversight and the culture that it would
expect. I have asked the department to confirm that we have the culture
necessary. For members' information, I take the opportunity to table
the letter that I have sent to the director general so that, in the interests
of absolute transparency and clarity, all members of Parliament can see that we
are getting on with the job of resolving these important issues.
