SUICIDE PREVENTION
STRATEGY
714. Mr S.K. L'ESTRANGE to the Minister for Health:
I have a supplementary question. I thank
the minister for his answer, but I bring him back to the specifics of my
question, which are that it relates to the 11 per cent of less funding that the
government has allocated to the prevention budget in the Mental Health
Commission budget. As members know, the suicide rate in WA has increased by
over 10 per cent and the rate over the last 12 months is the highest it has
been in over 20 years in Western Australia. Does the minister not see a need to
reverse the government's funding cuts to the prevention aspect of the
budget?

The budget is crafted with the
Mental Health Commission, in partnership with all mental health partners in the
community—the health service providers and the not-for-profits. I emphasise
that we are spending more than the former government ever did. We are spending
more on mental health than any government has and we will continue to do so to
make sure that we provide services to the community.
