This WA parliamentary question seeks data on the incarceration of fine defaulters in 2014, with a focus on Aboriginal people, women, and those with diagnosed mental illnesses. The response provides some data but states that information on mental illness treatment at the time of incarceration is not readily available.

(3) How many

On behalf of the Minister for
Corrective Services, I thank the honourable member for some notice of the
question. Note that as in question on notice 1832, the figures provided are the
total number of receptions for fine default only, rather than the number of
people. Receptions are more accurate, given that an individual person may enter
prison more than once. In light of that, and seriatim —
(1) There were 782.
(2) There were 344.
(3) There were 183.
(4) There were 122.
(5)–(6) The
Department of Corrective Services advises that information on the number of
prisoners who were being treated for a diagnosed mental illness at the time of
reception is not recorded in a manner that is easily retrievable. It is not
possible to accurately identify those prisoners who have a diagnosed mental
illness.
