1 The Council and the Department of Planning and Infrastructure advise that there is a shortage of residential land in Kununurra. This is due partly to physical constraints on the expansion of the town and partly to Native Title issues. 2 The Department of Housing and Works has briefed me on the issues. The department owns no vacant residential land in Kununurra, but it is redeveloping sites that become available through demolition to address housing needs. In 2002/2003 the department constructed 15 dwellings and is constructing another 12 dwellings in 2003/2004. 3 The department’s waiting list for Kununurra is 204. 4 Two years ago the number on the waiting list was 91. 5 Council has resolved to rezone some land for residential purposes. The Department of Planning and Infrastructure will release its land release plan for Kununurra in October. The Department of Housing and Works will examine the impact of these events on the land supply and I will consider housing needs in light of that information.
