I refer the minister to today’s news reports that a study to quantify the volume of water that can be drawn from the southern Yarragadee aquifer has estimated an annual recharge rate of 440 gigalitres per annum and a potential sustainable extraction rate of 300 gigalitres per annum. (1) Does the minister share Dr Jim Gill’s confidence in the ability of this resource to add to the water supply for Perth and the south west? (2) What is the status of the report referred to in The West Australian today, and when will the Government make a decision on the use of the resource? Hon KIM CHANCE

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1)-(2) Community update No 4 of December 2003, a publication of the Water and Rivers Commission, was released today. The investigations are continuing. It is important for the south west and the State as a whole that the facts be ascertained before any decision is made.
