(a) is there any estimate available for the proportion of available active beds in:
(i) Royal Perth Hospital; and
(ii) Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital,
that are occupied by patients who specifically required tertiary care; and
(b) if so, what are those figures and for which date do they apply; and
(c) if not, is the estimate contained in the Reid report still a realistic figure for these two hospitals?

(a) (i) Yes.
(ii) Yes.
(b) The average proportion of multi-day available active beds estimated to be occupied by tertiary patients in the 2006/07 financial year are:
(i) Royal Perth Hospital (Wellington St): 26%
(ii) Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital: 22%.
The remainder of beds are occupied by non-tertiary patients who may be admitted to a tertiary hospital for a range of reasons.
(c) The health reform program is aimed at reducing the number of non-tertiary patients admitted to tertiary hospitals by building capacity in Perth's general hospitals. This will allow care to be provided closer to where people live, improve patient flow, and ensure our tertiary facilities are used in the most effective way possible.
The estimate of beds contained in the Reid Report was reviewed and updated during the preparation of the Clinical Services Framework 2005-2015 (CSF). The CSF outlines the role of each metropolitan hospital and the key clinical services to be provided at each hospital site.
