Hon Sue Ellery questions the Attorney General regarding the steps taken to find alternative remand arrangements for 197 children locked in Kimberley police station cells over the past three years. The response clarifies that magistrates, not police, make remand decisions and that juveniles are transferred to Banksia Hill Detention Centre in Perth as soon as possible.

CHILDREN —
REMAND ARRANGEMENTS — KIMBERLEY
306. Hon SUE ELLERY to the Attorney General
representing the Minister for Police:
I refer to the 197 children locked
in police station cells in the Kimberley over the past three years. What steps
were taken by police to identify alternative remand arrangements to adult
police cells in each of those cases?

AnswerView source ↗

On behalf of the Minister for
Police, I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.
The decision to remand a juvenile in
custody is made by a magistrate, not by police. When this occurs in the
Kimberley, the only facilities currently available are police facilities.
However, juveniles on remand are flown to Perth at the earliest opportunity
where they are detained at Banksia Hill Detention Centre facility.
