BEACH DEVELOPMENT LIMITS
I refer to Labor’s policy to limit development near Western Australia’s beaches to five storeys. (1) Why did the minister approve an eight-storey limit at Scarborough beach? (2) Does the minister anticipate that broad community support will be required for individual development proposals between five and eight storeys at Scarborough? Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN

(1)-(2) I am sure that the member has read our policy and knows that it makes specific reference to the fact that there will be places on which we will allow eight-storey development when we are sure there is broad community support. We have been through a community consultation process in that area. The City of Stirling had also. There were question marks around that; therefore, we conducted another process which we believe was very fair and very reliable. Even the Westpolls of our good friends at The West Australian have supported outcomes similar to those that we found through this process. As part of the community consultation process, in conjunction with the policy, and informed the town planning scheme amendment, we determined that that particular town planning scheme amendment allows there to be an eight-storey development, provided that it meets certain standards in terms of delivery of tourism and recreational product. It is a very strong and good decision, and we are now seeing regeneration occurring at Scarborough beach.
