This question follows my question without notice of 20 June. (1) Can the minister provide a breakdown of the works program that includes the $82 million need identified for state roads in the south west that are expected to carry significant tonnages of blue gum plantation product? (2) Has work been done to identify costings on a range of different transport options and chip-mill locations? (3) If so, can the minister please outline the findings? (4) If not, why not? Hon G.T. GIFFARD

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) These works include reconstruction, widening and passing lanes on Kojonup Road, including the section from Donnybrook to Boyup Brook; South Western Highway, including the sections from Donnybrook to Bridgetown and Bridgetown to Manjimup; and Muirs Highway, including the sections from Nyamup to Strachan, Manjimup to Nyamup and Strachan to the great southern regional boundary. These works are required not only because of the plantation timber industry, but also due to increased general and tourism use and the need to improve the standard of the road. (2) Not by the Government. (3) Not applicable. (4) The proponent of the proposed chip-mill at Donnybrook has undertaken an analysis of alternative locations and transport costs. The site at Donnybrook appears to satisfy the Government’s objectives of maximising the role of rail transport and reducing reliance on heavy road transport.
