I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) Half of the 200 specialist literacy and numeracy teachers will be used specifically to teach numeracy. (2) Specialists will be qualified primary teachers who demonstrate - (a) a high level of competence in classroom teaching and in monitoring intended learning outcomes in literacy or numeracy; (b) understanding of outcomes-focused education; (c) commitment to principles of inclusivity as they relate to literacy and numeracy education; and (d) interpersonal skills that demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and partners. (3) The early years of schooling - years K to 3 - are targeted in this program.  However, the Getting It Right strategy will eventually extend beyond those years. (4) In semester 2, 25 specialist numeracy teachers will be comprehensively trained in preparation for implementation of the program at the commencement of the 2002 school year.
