I thank the member for Belmont for her question. It was great
to be at the Belmont Bombers Junior Football Club a couple of months ago to see
the kids from different nationalities getting involved through KidSport.
Everyone in Parliament knows that the KidSport program assists youngsters whose
families have financial pressures by subsidising them to get involved with
sporting clubs so they can receive all the benefits that flow through that. We
committed $10 million over four years initially to target 30 000 kids. Up to
this week, 24 073 children have received a total of 30 557 vouchers. There has
been a big take-up. That equates to about $4.5 million of that budget. There
has been a phenomenal take-up; it was a lot quicker than we thought. I think
that is indicative of the importance that parents and the community place in
what this program can achieve. Forty-eight per cent of those children had never
previously been involved in a sporting club. That is a really important figure,
because there will be ongoing benefits to those communities, and I will give a
couple of statistics in a moment.
I appreciate the support of local government across Western
Australia and other referring agents. We now have 126 local governments
participating. I have a couple of statistics that members might find
interesting. Member for Wanneroo, 6.7 per cent of all vouchers have been
distributed through the City of Wanneroo; there has been a huge uptake out
there. Member for Gosnells, 5.7 per cent of all vouchers have been distributed
through the City of Gosnells, which is really important in that area. The
member for Albany is not in the chamber, but 4.6 per cent of all vouchers have
been distributed through the City of Albany. Member for Armadale, of the 2 020
clubs participating so far in KidSport, the Armadale Junior Football Club is number
one for take-up, with 386 vouchers allocated to that club, so I hope that has a
positive effect in the member's area. The Mandurah Basketball
Association has been allocated 276 vouchers and the Balga Soccer Club has been
allocated 321 vouchers. One of the important things with this program that has
exceeded our expectations is the diversity across the program. We have 4 370
Aboriginal children involved in the program, which is 18 per cent of the
take-up; 2 005 culturally and linguistically diverse children, which is eight per
cent; and 1 503 children with a disability, which is six per cent. It covers
across the board.
I thank members on both sides of the house for their support
of this program. I am really proud of what the program has been able to
achieve. It will continue to focus on a really important area for our
community.
