(1)–(4) I am very proud to say I am a vice-patron of the Claremont Football Club and my colleague, an esteemed player — Mr T.K. Waldron : I wouldn’t say esteemed! Mr C.J. BARNETT : He is right about that; I would not say that either! The Minister for Sport and Recreation is the only player in the club’s history never to have handballed, certainly not forward of the centre line! I played many games with him; he is a very fine and skilful footballer. Mr E.S. Ripper : Why does that club get $16.5 million? Mr C.J. BARNETT : I am answering the question. Apparently I have an appalling conflict of interest because I am a vice-patron of the Claremont Football Club and played a few reserves and colts games. Mr E.S. Ripper : Why did it get $16.5 million? Mr C.J. BARNETT : For the Leader of the Opposition’s information, my recollection is that I made it clear in the cabinet discussions that I was a vice-patron. I think the Minister for Sport and Recreation — Mr E.S. Ripper : You dismissed the claim, but you acknowledge — Mr C.J. BARNETT : A bit of maturity please. There are children in the gallery, shocked by the Leader of the Opposition’s behaviour. Mr E.S. Ripper : Shocked by your pomposity and arrogance. Mr C.J. BARNETT : They are. They saw the appalling behaviour of members opposite when the member for Scarborough got to her feet. Every child up there noticed it, particularly the young girls, who noticed the behaviour of members opposite. Mr T.G. Stephens : They are shocked that you’re a crook. Withdrawal of Remark The SPEAKER : I suggest to you, member for Pilbara, that you might want to withdraw that remark. Mr T.G. Stephens : I withdraw the remark. Questions without Notice Resumed The SPEAKER : While I am on my feet, I formally call to order for the first time today the member for Jandakot. Mr C.J. BARNETT : Both I and the Minister for Sport and Recreation made clear to cabinet that we had an association as past players of the Claremont Football Club. Mr E.S. Ripper : Did cabinet make a decision on that conflict of interest issue? Mr C.J. BARNETT : I have very little time for the Leader of the Opposition, so I will not take his interjections. Mr E.S. Ripper : Is that your standard of accountability? Mr C.J. BARNETT : I will sit down, if the member is going to interrupt repeatedly, and I will not answer the question.
