TAXPAYER-FUNDED POLITICAL POLLING
Given that the Premier’s government continues to conduct taxpayer-funded political polling on a range of issues, I ask - (1) Will he please provide details of the number of polls carried out by his government in the past nine months? (2) How many polls were conducted in - (a) the metropolitan area; and (b) country and regional Western Australia? (3) Will he please table the questions, results and any other details of each poll undertaken in the past nine months? Mr A.J. CARPENTER

(1)-(3) In the first place, I reject the premise of the question. The coalition government might have done that. As soon as we were elected to government, we conducted quarterly attitudinal monitoring surveys that are tabled in this place. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Order! I hope the next line does not promote any laughter and glee from members on the left-hand side. It is impossible for the Premier or any minister to give an answer while members on the other side are cackling. Mr A.J. CARPENTER : Thank you for protection, Mr Speaker. I felt momentarily under pressure! Any behavioural psychologist would have had a field day watching and listening to the opposition parties this week. I attribute the hysterical outbreaks we have heard from the opposition parties to the amount of pressure one or two of their members have been under. The hysterical performances of the member for Vasse when he has been on his feet have been something to behold - something quite amazing. Ms S.E. Walker interjected. Mr A.J. CARPENTER : Does the member for Nedlands disagree with the proposition? Mr P.D. Omodei : Answer the question. Ms S.E. Walker interjected. Mr A.J. CARPENTER : I have actually. I have not only thought of it, but also written it. Mrs M.H. Roberts interjected. Mr A.J. CARPENTER : The surveys are tabled in this place. I must say that I was never - that does not matter. I shall leave The West Australian alone for the day, and we will talk about share trading later. The surveys are tabled in this place, as they were under the Liberal and National coalition government. Government agencies may commission market research to ensure that the services they provide meet the needs and expectations of their customers, who are the taxpayers of this state. The member is welcome to ask a specific question. If he would like to peruse the polling that is tabled, I believe quarterly in this place, and has an issue with it, he should please let me know.
