NICHELIVING —
HOME INDEMNITY INSURANCE
775. Mr R.S. LOVE to the Premier:
I refer to the state government's
$40 million taxpayer-funded bailout of Nicheliving and reports in The West Australian today that customers have been in contact with the Home Builders Action
Group and controversial former Premier
Brian Burke seeking support as their home indemnity insurance payments fall
below their construction costs.
(1) When did the
government first become aware of Brian Burke's involvement, and did it
endorse or authorise his outreach to former Nicheliving customers?
(2) What does
that say about the government's lack of concern for hundreds of former
Nicheliving customers that they have been forced to turn to such a controversial
figure such as Brian Burke for assistance?
(3) Was
Nicheliving part of the government's business round table in previous
years?

(1)–(3) I
do not know, I think is the answer to that question. What people do in relation
to contacting a member of the community is not something I follow closely. That
is entirely their business, and, quite frankly, I have nothing further to say
in relation to that. I have not had any contact with the individual in
question, and I do not hold others to account for their own particular actions.
They can contact who they like. That is their prerogative. It has no bearings
on the decisions that the government makes or the policies that we put in
place.
Our priority has always been to
protect the customers of Nicheliving and to make sure we bring about a resolution
for them as soon as possible. If we had followed the advice from those
opposite, the matter would still be stuck in the legal processes today, and
those families would have no recourse. All they would be able to do is sit and watch the lawyers' picnic while
they continue to wait to get a roof over their heads. Thanks to the
action of my government, we have brought about a speedy resolution. We are now
in a position that those families can get access to the home indemnity
insurance fund and get their homes built. I would have thought that any decent,
commonsense and reasonable person would think that that was a good outcome.
